Invest in 4-H

“Supporting the Massachusetts 4-H program is an INVESTMENT. An investment to our children, an investment to our communities, an investment to our future.”

Nancy Garrabrants, Director of Extension

Facts
4-H works. A 2001 Montana State University study documented that youth who do not participate in 4-H programs are two to three times more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as substance abuse and truancy. A similar study by the University of Idaho reached the same conclusion.

4-H is cost-effective. The Massachusetts 4-H Program serves over 3,500 youth per year, utilizing an extensive network of over 700 volunteers. In 2002, the total cost per 4-H participant was $350 per year. U.S. Department of Labor statistics estimate the value of our volunteer force to be over $6,000,000.

Success for the next 100 years. New sources of support are needed to ensure the success of this valuable program. The new funding model for 4-H in Massachusetts is being observed by Extension systems nationally as a potential solution for their own changing needs. The Second Century Campaign is laying the groundwork for a proactive funding model that has potential national significance.
