Types of Planned Giving:
- Charitable Remainder Trust
- Charitable Lead Trust
- Gifts by Will
- Charitable Gift Annuity
- Gifts of Life Insurance
Charitable Remainder Trust:
A Charitable Remainder Trust is a trust that allows the donor
to make a charitable gift but retain for life, or a term of years,
the right for specified beneficiaries to receive payments from
the trust. Upon death of the last surviving income beneficiary,
the remainder interest is turned over to UMass to create an endowment
fund for the Massachusetts 4-H Program. Charitable Remainder
Trusts generally qualify for income tax and gift tax or estate tax charitable
deductions.
Charitable Lead Trust
A Charitable Lead Trust provides the Massachusetts 4-H Program,
through the University of Massachusetts, with income for a term of years
or during the donor's lifetime. At the termination of the trust, the assets
are returned to the donor or designated "noncharitable" beneficiaries
such as donor’s family members. When highly appreciated assets are
removed from the estate, gift and estate taxes are minimized.
Gifts by Will
An outright bequest is the simplest means of obtaining an estate
tax charitable deduction while investing in the future of the
Massachusetts 4-H Program.
It is important that you use proper and precise
language in your will so funds are used in the specific manner
that you intend.
If you want to designate stock for the general support of Massachusetts
4-H, you should include the following language:
To the University
of Massachusetts Foundation, Inc. at 1 Beacon Street, Boston,
MA 02108, I give _________ for the general support of the Massachusetts
4-H Program at the Amherst Campus of the University of Massachusetts.
NOTE: Consult you personal advisor for specific legal and tax advice.
Charitable Gift Annuity
A contractual agreement between a donor and UMass that provides
a guaranteed fixed income for the lifetime of the donor, or
for the lifetimes of one or two beneficiaries chosen by the donor.
The gift will provide a significant immediate income tax deduction
and part of the guaranteed income may be tax exempt. At the end
of the annuity, Massachusetts 4-H will receive the gift to use
as directed by the donor.
Gifts of Life Insurance
Life insurance policies may be used to make substantial gifts to
Massachusetts 4-H. Paid-in-full policies as well as current policies can
be designated for use by 4-H. Careful structuring of these gifts can provide
tax benefits to the donor as well as provide significant gifts to the
program.
